Our plants are not only valuable food for us, they provide valuable genetic material to make our food for the next season. The seeds we buy are open-pollinated and heirloom varieties that come from other seed exchanges and seed saving organizations. It is important for us to also maintain our own stock of seeds. This not only gives us independence in our growing, but allows us to preserve varieties that do particularly well in our climate. You will notice that we will often leave plants such as lettuce in the garden even after they have gone to seed, and that we will tag certain fruits to be left on the vine. This is so that some seed from the most successful plants can be saved for the next season.
We hope to grow our seed exchange program to supply not only our own seed stock, but be able to offer our climate-specific seeds to others as well, in the form of seeds and seedlings. If you have seed that you would like to contribute to the Heart Beet Seed Exchange, we would love to include it in our growing gene pool.
